Should I lay on my belly? Do I just lay here? Or should mommy carry me? Photo sessions with 3 month olds are unique. Not nerdy kid unique, more like it's time to realize who's boss unique. I can sometimes relate to the dog whisperer. At a photo session I listen for the babies needs, determine how they're feeling emotionally and let them tell me what they're most comfortable with and what would make them the happiest. I know it sounds a bit looney but those are the looney thoughts that are going through my head. (And here people thought I had these amazingly artistic, creative thoughts in my mind all along).
The baby's in control. They will tell me when they are ready, when they've had enough, and will give me an occasional smile I better be ready for when they think it's appropriate. My charming jokes no longer work, my simulation of a crazy girl with a camera falling or the occasion bribe with a delicious blow pop have no use.
With that said they are the sweetest, most precious subjects to photograph. They have filled out from their fragile, newborn stage and are now delicious little marshmallows that give you an occasional smile that melts your heart.
It is an understanding between baby and photographer. Realize quickly who's the boss and you'll not only have a great time but will get great results.
